Our journey began early in the morning in Labuan Bajo, a small coastal town at the western tip of Flores Island, known as the gateway to Komodo. After a quick pickup, we left the bustling port town behind and headed inland toward a quiet and hidden natural gem — Lake Hano Limbung.
As we arrived, a soft mist still hovered above the still waters of the lake. Surrounded by hills and dense greenery, the lake felt untouched, sacred even. We strolled along the banks while listening to a local guide share stories of the lake’s cultural and ecological significance. It was peaceful — the kind of peace only nature can offer.
By noon, we were welcomed into a local villager’s home for a traditional lunch. It was a humble but heartwarming experience — sharing a meal made from local produce, served with Manggarai hospitality. Dishes like tapa kolo (bamboo-cooked rice) and spicy sambal lu'at added a flavorful kick to our experience.
In the afternoon, we continued to Rego Village, nestled at the foot of the hills. After a short break, we began a light trek to Timbang Raung Hill. The trail led us through small farms and into the woods. At the top, the view opened up to vast landscapes — green valleys, scattered villages, and the golden hues of the setting sun. It was a moment of awe, reflection, and gratitude.

As night fell, we returned to the village and stayed at a local homestay. Dinner was served in a family setting, followed by a cozy storytelling session where elders shared local legends and insights into Manggarai traditions. The simplicity and warmth of the home made us feel like we were part of the community, even if just for a night.
The next day began in the early hours before dawn. With flashlights in hand, we trekked up Empo Sanga Hill to catch the sunrise. The air was crisp, the path quiet, and as we reached the top, the first light of day began to stretch across the sky. The sunrise painted the landscape in gold, slowly revealing the layered beauty of West Manggarai. It was magical.
After a light breakfast and some rest back in the village, we packed up and drove to our final destination — the stunning Tengku Siwa Waterfall. The path to the waterfall was a bit challenging, but the reward was more than worth it. The roar of the cascading water, the fresh mist, and the lush surroundings created a serene escape. Some of us dipped our feet in the cold water, while others simply relaxed and soaked in the atmosphere.
By late afternoon, it was time to return to Labuan Bajo. The ride back was quiet — each of us lost in thought, carrying memories of two incredible days. It was more than just a trip. It was a journey through the heart of Flores — where nature, culture, and community come together in perfect harmony.
