The Hidden Legacy of Tengku Siwa

The Hidden Legacy of Tengku Siwa

In a lush valley hidden behind the dense jungles of Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, flows a waterfall that cascades down from a tall cliff like a curtain of light. This waterfall is known as Tengku Siwa—and behind its breathtaking beauty lies the tragic tale of a young man who fell victim to jealousy and betrayal.

Siwa, the Handsome Young Man

Long ago, in the village of Limbung, lived a young man named Siwa. He was no ordinary youth. Siwa was known for his remarkable good looks, his warm personality, and a charm that far surpassed that of his seven brothers. While his siblings were said to have average appearances and unusual postures with dragging steps, Siwa stood out like a radiant light in the dark.

His presence became the pride of the village. Girls from neighboring villages would often visit just to catch a glimpse of his smile. However, it was this very beauty that planted seeds of envy in the hearts of his seven brothers.

The Evil Plan

Day by day, their jealousy turned into hatred. They felt that Siwa had stolen all the attention and admiration from the villagers. Driven by resentment, they devised a sinister plan. One day, they invited Siwa to play in the forest. There, they persuaded him to climb a pinang (areca palm) tree—a tree they had secretly sabotaged by cutting most of its base, leaving just enough to keep it standing.

Naively and without suspicion, Siwa climbed the tree. Just as he reached the top, the weakened trunk gave way. His body was thrown through the air and crashed onto the rocks below. Siwa's mother tried to save him with a rope, but the brothers cut the rope, sending Siwa plummeting into the deep ravine—the very place where the waterfall now flows.

The Curse and the Spirit

As Siwa fell into the ravine, a supernatural being suddenly appeared. In the local language, it uttered the words "Kar ko Mbelek"—with "kar" meaning earth and "mbelek" meaning mud. Startled, the brothers replied, "Mbelek!"—and in that moment, a curse befell them, and Siwa’s body was never found again.

Since that day, a clear, rushing stream emerged from the place where he fell—as if the earth itself wept for the young man’s fate. The villagers believed that Siwa’s spirit merged with the waterfall, quietly guarding it in eternal solitude. Because of this tragic event, the village was renamed Sano Limbung, serving as a lasting reminder of the betrayal and sorrow that once took place there.

A Legacy Never Forgotten

To this day, the tale of Siwa is still told by the elders of Tureng and Sambor villages. For them, Tengku Siwa is more than just a natural wonder—it is a symbol of goodness betrayed, love never given a chance, and beauty destroyed by envy.

And if you ever find yourself standing before the Tengku Siwa Waterfall, you might feel a different kind of chill in the air—as if nature itself is whispering the story of a kind-hearted young man who became a legend.
