Amidst the dense forests and the tranquil hills of West Reok, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, lies a hidden natural masterpiece that remains largely untouched by human presence: Tengku Siwa Waterfall.

Reaching this destination requires genuine intent. One must traverse narrow, winding roads, pass through agricultural fields and rice paddies, and continue on foot along narrow paths enveloped by lush vegetation and the distant sounds of nature calling.

The journey to Tengku Siwa is not merely a matter of distance; it is an experience—an adventure imbued with awe, serenity, and introspection. From the town of Ruteng, travelers typically embark on a two-hour drive northward to Kajong, then turn toward Sambor Village, also known locally as Nggalak. From that point, the terrain changes significantly. Motor vehicles can only proceed so far; the remainder of the journey must be completed on foot. Step by step, travelers enter the forest, navigating over protruding tree roots and through dense undergrowth, as if nature itself were testing the resolve of those seeking to witness its hidden wonder.

Upon arrival, fatigue vanishes almost instantaneously. Tengku Siwa Waterfall rises majestically to a height of approximately 70 to 84 meters, cascading clear, powerful streams of water from a towering cliff cloaked in thick green moss. The scene evokes the image of an immense emerald curtain swaying gently in the wind. The cliff is more than stone—it is a living canvas upon which nature paints with its most vibrant hues. The moss-covered surface enhances the dramatic beauty of the landscape, especially when sunlight pierces through the canopy above, reflecting off the mist and spray below.

At the base of the waterfall, a natural pool has formed—serene and invigorating. Visitors often take a moment to bathe or simply dip their feet, feeling the refreshing purity of the mountain spring. The thunderous sound of water crashing below blends harmoniously with birdsong and the whispering wind through the trees, composing a natural symphony that soothes the spirit. There is no cell phone signal, no crowds—only one’s self, nature, and the quiet voice within.

The name “Tengku Siwa” itself bears profound cultural significance. In the local language, “Tengku” means ravine or gorge, while “Siwa” refers to an ancestral figure believed to hold a spiritual connection to this place. The local community regards this site not merely as a tourist attraction, but as a sacred heritage site—an inheritance from the ancestors that must be preserved and respected. It is therefore unsurprising that the location is often imbued with a mystical aura, especially when a gentle mist settles among the trees.

However, despite its breathtaking beauty, access to Tengku Siwa Waterfall remains a significant challenge. The roads leading there are often damaged, rocky, and can become impassable during the rainy season. Local residents and village authorities have, on several occasions, proposed infrastructure improvements to facilitate access—while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental conservation.

Paradoxically, it is this very inaccessibility that has preserved the sanctity of Tengku Siwa. It remains a well-guarded sanctuary, offering solitude, wonder, and a profound connection with the natural world.

For those who have had the privilege of visiting, Tengku Siwa is not merely a waterfall—it is a divine masterpiece, hidden deep within the wilderness, awaiting discovery by those patient and humble enough to truly appreciate its majesty.

And as one retraces the path homeward, it becomes clear that the journey was more than a physical voyage—it was a spiritual encounter with a small piece of paradise on the island of Flores.
